The way people practices of Islam across the world is diverse. I think using the term African Islam is a way of separating it from Middle Eastern Islam. African's most likely integrate Islam into their everyday traditional and ancestral practices, transforming the religion into something unique. I think the term can be productive but it is most likely used in a negative way to separate Arab muslims from African muslims.
