"are building a new identity by merging their indigenous practices with Islam."

Do you see anything in the images here that would support that idea (choose 1-2 images)? What do you think the author means by 'merging their indigenous practices with Islam?' That is, can 'Islam' be separated from other components of culture in this setting?

I have chosen the photo of the women standing in front of the waterfall because it blends elements of both cultures through clothing. The women are wearing headscarves which are Islamic, but also wearing skirts which I recognize to be similar to traditional Mexican skirts I have seen before. These women are incorporating garments from both their new religious tradition and from their cultural traditions. I think Islam can be separated from other components of culture in this setting, because according to my understanding it is fairly new to this region. While monotheistic religions might have been prominent in the area, Islam has distinct components such as worship in Mosques and the consumption of halal meat that makes it distinct within the region.
